Lesson  5

WATER BAPTISM

In our last study  we saw how important it is to follow the Word.  In this study we want to study God’s Word about Baptism.  Though we might have some understanding of baptism, we should follow God’s Word.

BAPTISM: is an outward sign of an inward conviction.

1.   Matthew 3:15-16

15: And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

16: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of     God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:  KJV

What example do we have from Jesus towards baptism? _______________________

2.  In Matthew 3:16, describe how Jesus was baptized. _________________________

3.   The word baptize comes from the Greek word “baptidzo” or to submerge or dip.  Was Jesus baptized this way? _________________________________________________

4.   Romans 6:3-11

3: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,

even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5: For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

7: For he that is dead is freed from sin.

8: Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

9: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10: For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11: Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  KJV

11.  Acts 8:26-37

26: And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27: And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28: Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29: Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30: And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31: And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32: The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34: And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35: Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36: And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37: And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  KJV

What was Philip’s answer to the Ethiopian eunuch when he asked to be baptized?

12.  Acts 8:38-39

38: And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39: And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.  KJV

In these verses read the account of a baptism;  they both went down into the water.  Does this affirm the Greek word “baptidzo” (to submerge)? __________________

13.  Acts 9:18

And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.  KJV

Paul was a well educated Jew, a leader.  At his conversion, did he submit to Jesus’ command of baptism? _________________________________________________

14.  Read these accounts of water baptism.

Acts 10:47-48

47: Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

48: And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.  KJV

Acts 16:13-15

13: And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

14: And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15: And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. KJV

Acts 16:33

And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. KJV

Acts 18:8

And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.  KJV

Acts 19:4-5

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  KJV

There are three things we have scripturally observed.

a.  Physical act of a spiritual experience

b.  We identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

c.  The public all witnessed the outward sign of our inward conviction.

15.  If a friend asks you why you should be baptized, what is your answer?

______________________________________________________________________

16.  Since you now believe and you have seen that this is a command of Jesus, if you

have not been baptized, what is your response? ______________________________

17.  Do you want baptism? _________________________________________________
